Types of Home Remodels & Renovations
Renovating What Works. Rethinking What Doesn’t.
A renovation does not have to erase the character of your home.
Maybe the proportions are right but the layout is not. The original millwork is worth keeping but needs refinishing. The view is already there, but the windows are too small. Good renovation design starts by figuring out what deserves to stay, what needs to change, and how the new rooms can feel like they have always belonged.
Our interior, architectural, and cabinetry designers work alongside your contractor to help guide those decisions early, from floor plans and built-ins to finishes, storage, and lighting.
Healthier Choices While the Walls Are Open
As old materials come out and new ones go in, we can look at lower-emission paints and finishes, natural materials, indoor air quality, and choices that may make the home more comfortable.
One Team, From Plans to Punch List
Our team of designers works alongside your remodeling contractor throughout the project. We provide the drawings, specifications, selections, and answers your construction team needs as the work moves forward.
Renovation or Remodel: What's the Difference?
A renovation works with what is already there. New finishes, fixtures, cabinetry, flooring, and other updates can completely change how a room looks and feels without changing the basic layout.
A remodel goes further. Walls may move. Rooms may change size or purpose. A closed-off kitchen might open to the living area, or an underused space might become something entirely different.
In reality, many projects include a bit of both. What matters most is understanding what needs to change before construction begins, so the scope, budget, timeline, and permitting requirements are clear from the start.
Our Asheville Home Remodeling & Renovation Design Process
1. Understand What Is Not Working
We start with the home as it is today.
What feels cramped? Which rooms are doing too many jobs? Where is storage missing? What do you love enough to keep, and what are you ready to change?
We also talk through your budget, timeline, priorities, and longer-term plans for the home. That gives us a clear starting point before we begin.
2. Space Planning & Interior Design
This is where we start to rethink your space.
We explore new layouts, room relationships, cabinetry, and architectural changes, then walk you through floor plans, elevations, and 3D visualizations. so you can see how the renovated home could work before construction begins.
3. Material Selections
We guide you through flooring, tile, cabinetry, countertops, fixtures, lighting, paint, hardware, and other selections.
When healthier materials are a priority, we can also explore lower-VOC finishes, natural materials, and other lower-emission options.
4. Construction
Renovations almost always uncover questions once the work begins.
Our team stays connected with your contractor to clarify drawings, answer design questions, and help resolve the details that come up along the way.
The People + Principles Behind Your Home
Your Design Team
Our Design Standards
Biophilic Design
A renovation is a chance to strengthen the connection between the home and its surroundings. We embrace the biophilic design principles that might mean enlarging windows, adding glass doors, opening sightlines to the landscape, or bringing natural materials like wood and stone indoors.
Indoor Air Quality
When old materials come out, you have an opportunity to make more informed choices about what goes back in.
Paints, stains, cabinetry, adhesives, finishes, and other materials can all affect indoor air quality. We help you explore lower-VOC, lower-emission, natural, and responsibly sourced options where they make sense for the project.
Aging-in-Place
For many homeowners, renovating is about staying in the home they already love.
Using Certified Aging-in-Place principles, we can consider wider pathways, easier transitions, accessible storage, better circulation, and other changes that may make the home more comfortable to live in as your needs change.
Furnishings That Finish the Home
The furniture, rugs, lighting, textiles, and finishing pieces you bring back into the home all affect how the new spaces look, feel, and function.
Through our furnishings partner, Atelier Maison & Co., we can help source pieces that work with the renovated home and reflect the same attention to materials, quality, comfort, and healthier living that guided the design from the start.
